my query: let $u := doc("user.xml")/user/@username return <m> {$u} </m>
 
 
response:

Why am i geting a blank response?

It's not a blank response since you get an empty element : <m/>

<m> is empty because
doc("user.xml")/user/@username is empty
or because
doc("user.xml")/user is empty
or because
doc("user.xml") is empty

Could you confirm ?
