json serialization of date (want date object vs. string) | mongrel | mongodb

mountainbiker
I have a mongo entry (being submitted via mongrel).  The entry would look like

<entry>
    <date>{current-dateTime()}</date>
    <flag json:literal="true">{true()}</flag>
    <stuff json:array="true">A</stuff>
    <stuff json:array="true">B</stuff>
    <stuff json:array="true">C</stuff>
</entry>

MongoDB is saying the date field is a string.

Is there a way to force date to be a json date?
